I am a freshman(boy) at a decent basketball school. I am planning on trying out for my freshman basketball team. Im in high school btw. I am a little overweight without much stamina but I believe to myself that I am a good player. I am pretty good on defense, and mid ranged shooting. I have made a list and there are about 8-10 people that I think will make it over me. Any tips would be greatly appreciated to make the team an actually play.|||Good decision making is always one of the most important things for a basketball player to have. Shooting is good; however, a lot of people get by without being a great shooter. I'm on varsity at my school and I have the best shot ever :) but, honestly, I'm a little below average for everything else, so I'm not a starter.|||run and get in shape and play hard especially on defense and get as many rebounds and loose balls as you can...that is what the coaches look for ... the players who will do the little things and the important things ...learn how to set good picks....learn how to hustle...rebound and pass the ball and don't slack up while you are on the court...practice hard...the other stuff will come the more you play , but you have to play to learn...|||depends on the other team|||Well if there were open gyms at your school and you didn't go, then your chances are very slim. but lets just say there aren't. First of all, you need to get to know the coach well. If you see him in the hall, talk to him, or just say hello, how are you doing. that will assure that he will be looking at you at tryouts. for middle school, i never met the coach in my life and i was very good, i honestly think i was one of the top 5 players but the problem was, i didn't get to play scrimmage games in the same gym as the head coach so he never noticed me. fortunately i made it but... the assistant coach knew who i was and recomended me on the team. i was lucky. but heres a list of tips.
-meet the coach and just say hello coach _____. do it every time you pass him in the hall. don't do it everytime you see him.
-the day before tryouts get about 9-10 hours of sleep
-the day during tryouts, eat a lot of potassium. (ill give you a diet you should go by at the end)
-make it a goal to run 2 miles each day before tryouts start. (give yourself a goal. 2 miles in 20 minutes was mine)
-eat healthy (don't keep eating junk food. you can eat baked potato chips, pretzels, etc. look at nutrition facts)
-hustle (dive for loose balls at tryouts, get the rebounds, sprint to the other end of the court, when the coach calls you in run to him dont walk, be a team player, clap for everyone when they make a basket.)
DIET LIST (look at nutrition facts on the back of the food.) if you have an ipod touch or iphone, download the app Lose It! that then enable nutrition facts and that will tell you how much % of stuff you have ingested
(day of tryouts)
Breakfast
50% of Carbohydrates
35% of Protein
15% of fat
2 cups of healthy fluids (juice, milk, water)
100% vitamin C
3g of fiber
400mg or more of potassium
Lunch
60% Carbs
30% Protein
10% Fat
2 Cups of healthy fluids (juice, milk water)
4g of fiber
500mg or more of potassum
1 Hour before tryouts
2 cups of healthy fluids (juice, milk, water)
A healthy granola bar (you want more carbs than protein now. about 20g of carbs, 3g of protein, .5g of fat)
300g of potassium (banana)
after tryouts
50% protein
30% carbs
20% fat
foods with potassium
fruits
mainly bannanas
during each of you classes drink at least 1 cup of healthy fluids
the reason for me telling you to drink all these fluids is so you dont feel dehudrated and you wont pass out. almost happened to me at high school tryouts.
Good Luck.
