How should i strength train for basketball?

Im pretty skinny, well not really skinny. Im trying to gain some strength and put on a little muscle for basketball. I heard that running defeats the whole purpose of lifting but i dont really buy into that since i see many basketball players who lift and do a lot of running. How should i strength train for basketball?|||Jogging and Light Weight Lifting|||Running for distance defeats the purpose. Running sprints will actually help you burn fat and increase muscle size.
