How can I start training for basketball?

I'm in 8th grade, and have never really been good at sports. Lately, in PE, we've been playing basketball, and I've really enjoyed it. My coach even complimented me, which has never happened before. :) So, I am thinking of trying to train for the freshman team, but I'm really behind, as lots of girls have already been on the 7th and 8th grade teams. Are there any things I can do to make up for the lost time?|||You're totally fine. A few of the best NBA players (namely Tim Duncan and Michael Jordan) weren't good basketball players until high school. You've got plenty of time and the best thing that helps is repetition. Find a court, get a ball, and go there religiously. The best way to get good fast is to get a trainer, but if that doesn't work out you can always find some online resource like YouTube to help get the fundamentals of the game down, and all it takes is practice and you'll get there!

PS: Free throws are a huge thing to work on, coaches love players who can knock it down from the line.
