A point guard is generally the shortest player on the team. It is up to him to carry the ball up the court and call out plays. He needs to have good ball handling skills and nice outside (3pt) shooting. You also need to be very quick to move around the court.
Shooting Guard (SG)
Shooting guard is generally the second shortest on the team. It is up to this player to score a lot of the points. They need good ball handling skills and be able to shoot from anywhere (3pt, inside, layup etc.). Some speed would also help.
Small Forward (SF)
A small forward is the middle height person on the team. He needs a good shooting ability from mid range and close (generally not from 3pt range), some good defensive ability would definitely help too.
Power Forward (PF)
A power forward is usually the second tallest on the team. You need a good inside shooting ability (mid range shooting would help) and you need to play defense pretty well. A power forward is generally relied on to stop the shots and get some rebound.
Centre (C)
A centre is the tallest player on the team. He needs to be able to put the ball away inside and underneath the basket almost every time (depending on your age you should be able to dunk too). He is the person who will block shots and get a lot of rebounds, he is generally relied on for defense.
Remember, you can generally combine any two positions that are next to each other. For example, I play combo guard (PG/SG).
Basically as you go down this list, the players go from being offense based to defense based. They also go from being faster to slower and taller to shorter. The positions at the top of this list are more skill based whereas the ones towards the bottom are more strength based (I'm not saying you don't need skill to play the taller positions).
Speak to a coach, let him see you play, he will make the right decision for what position you should play.
Overall, just play a position that feels right to you, if you like shooting, play SG or PG. Do you like using your strength to stop the ball, play C.|||I hope it helped bro and trust me, if you practice you can go anywhere, even to the NBA ;)
